Nothing in this movie matches even Heather Donahue's first-movie snot bubble for realism. No amount of superimposed pause button blips and edits can make such artificiality believable. Perhaps for someone who never saw The Blair Witch Project, this might represent an adequate. Jump scares (which Blair Witch relies on too often) have become the province of the lazy filmmaker. Found footage has evolved from being edgy and interesting to being an overused joke. "Let's talk it over in private," one character says, and the recorder rolls on. But this is 2016 and not 2000 and the horror genre has moved on. The Blair Witch Project is quite the opposite: lacking in jump scares but filled with deeply psychological horror. Other scenes simply don't feel like occasions when the camera would be on. Blair Witch feels momentary it’ll make you jump a few times in the theater, but it won’t keep you up at night. Who exactly is holding the camera when it jitter-pans past every character and none possess even a Go-Pro? Is there a third, invisible person in the tent with two others in nervous discussion? How can a victim crawling through a tight tunnel record herself head-on without aiming a camera at her face? And who in the name of escape would do so, anyway?
